Back before the telephone system was de-regulated over here, resulting in
hundreds of regional, semi-autonomous little communications fiefdoms, The
Phone Company was rather like Communism:
"...if you had a beef with a department store, for instance, you could
always go to another department store: '**** you, Macy's I'm going to
Gimbels!' "
"You couldn't say: '**** you, Phone Company! I'm going to the ...uh...
other
phone company...' "
' Yeah, schmuck? *WHAT* other phone company?'
"Man; you get too hot with the Phone Company and they'll **** *you*, Jim!
You'll wind up with a piece of string and a couple of tin cans: 'Hello?
Hello...?' "
--Lenny Bruce, circa 1964
