You may not be asking for sympathy, but you have mine.  I have a friend 
who's a graphic artist.  He has 6 children and his wife is a 
stay-at-home (with 6 kids, who could afford day care?).  He's been out 
of work off and on for the last couple of years.  He'll get a job and 
it's going good, but suddenly the company decides to downsize.  The last 
time, they eliminated the whole department, so now there's 20 other 
artitsts out there competing for the same jobs.

Fifteen years ago, hubby went through something similar.  He was coaxed 
into leaving a stable, well-paying job with benefits to manage a 
recording studio.  The change would be a good hike in pay, and we felt 
like we were living high on the hog (sorry, Horace!).  Everything was 
going great except for the fact that the owner brought him into the job 
under false pretenses.  See, he wanted Mark to himself (he was 
moonlighting elsewhere), but he didn't have the funds to KEEP him 
exclusive.  He was actually taking out loans to pay Mark's salary! 
After about 9 months of this, it all blew up in his face and he couldn't 
pay the salary any more.  So there we were, no job and no prospects.  To 
make a long story shorter, hubby wound up getting a job in a different 
(but somewhat related field) which eventually put him in the position to 
land the job he has now -- back in his field of choice.

So hang in there...it WILL get better...and think about looking at 
related industries on the periphery of casino/hotel/airline industries. 
  Maybe something will pop up there...Have you thought about the cruise 
lines?  Or working internationally?
