AZ, I hope you will have a wonderful half-century birthday party and I
would like to send you a great new job for a present. However, I am
here to take umbrage. Umbrage? Yes, I reject the notion that a human
being with a functional brain suddenly ceases to be able to learn
anything after that brain is 50 years old. Hey, the brain is just
sitting up there in your skull, doing its job. You gotta feed it,
man. It needs nourishment. Learn something new, whether it leads to
a job or not. You never know where new paths will lead. My brain is
now 76 years old and I have to feed it every day. Something,
anything. A little bit of new news. A popcorn of an astonishment. A
sneaky s**** of a new thought. And don't neglect exercising your
body. I try to go to a local pool twice a week: water exercised for
arthritis. And twice a week, I work out at home with weights: a half-
hour for that and fifteen minutes cooling off with a ice pack on my
back. Then I feel great. And, believe it or not, the brain has been
working out at the same time.
This is not something new to me. I was thinking, remembering, the
other day, that when I was in my late teens or early 20's, I went to a
Jack LaLanne studio and did real weight lifting. Then for a few
years, while in drama school and later, between the births of my two
sons, I took ballet cl*****. Hey, I'm not suggesting that you put on
a tutu. I am just illustrating ways in which to get the brain working
to your advantage. Yes, the water exercises cost a few bucks; so did
all the other physical jerks I did and still do. But it's like food
for the brain.
Kid, I really feel for you. Having lived through some hard times
myself, I can really empathize with you. So pull up your socks, and
go get 'em, Tiger.
Hugs,
Joyce
