Allen Carr was helpful, I used some of points and discarded

by Burner Fan <jkraal@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 28, 2008 at 06:39 PM

Friends,

With regards to the Allen Carr method it is im****tant to remember that
his teachings are intended as instruction and not advice.
If you decide to pick and choose convenient sections of his work
whilst discarding/ignoring others you are at risk of corrupting your
quit.
How often do we hear people say something to the effect of:

"I liked a lot of what Allen Carr said but I don't like his anti-NRT
stance, I used some of his other stuff though"

Consider your quit to be like building structure, you can't just
remove columns and walls from various locations and expect that the
building will stand firm. If you strengthen half the columns and
neglect the other half the building will fail in the area of weakness,
regardless of the strength of the other pillars.
When someone states they have read Carr's book and picked various
points and discarded others I consider that person to have not
participated in a Carr quit at all.
A key feature of the Easyway method is Carr's insistence that is
perfectly acceptable to continue to smoke whilst you are reading his
book (note: this is not an instruction to break an established quit).
The reason for this so the smoker is not under duress during reading
of the book, if the person is smoking they are not sacrificing, if
they are not sacrificing they can relax and take in all the
information without feeling threatened. Before the person puts down
their last cigarette they are asked to HONESTLY asess their mindframe
and *****s whether there are any lingering doubts and desires
remaining. If there are lingering doubts or confusion the person is
advised to GO BACK and re-read the relevant paragraphs that deal with
the issue before starting their quit.
If you don't buy into any part of the Easyway Method then you cannot
by definition quit the 'easy' way, if you have lingering doubts and
desires you will continue to struggle and this will be 'hard'.

Some people will of course decide that they just disagree with
something that has been written and will leave it at that. This is
fine, everybody has the right to quit however they want, just
understand that you cannot participate partially in an Easyway quit.
You either remove all your brainwa****ng and make it easy of yourself
or you harbour elements of confusion and misconception and move on to
the ol-NRT bottle whilst gritting your teeth.
