OT Maybe-My sleep apnea: (long)

by Sparky <invalid@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 21, 2008 at 10:27 AM

At least you're not smoking while you're reading this.

I snore. Big f'n deal. My gf hates it. My concern was excessive
daytime sleepiness, lack of concentration and forgetfulness. OK, maybe
there is more going on than just my quit.

I went to the hospital sleep center. My gf's therapist recommended
this. Damn that libido phase. I went to a room with a
technician/nurse. He put wires all over my head, face, body, legs,
fingers. Then said, "We will watch you through this camera (points to
ceiling) and listen through this microphone (points to ceiling). Call
out if you need anything. Go to sleep now." (while we watch you.) I
actually fell asleep in about five minutes. He was really nice and
made the whole thing "not too bad."

Most prominent symptoms of apnea are snoring, not breathing while
asleep, excessive daytime sleepiness and obesity. Other symptoms
include lack of concentration, forgetfulness, uncharacteristic
irritability, anxiety, depression, mood and/or behavioral changes,
morning headaches, disorientation at awakening and loss of ***ual
interest.

Except for the libido phase, I thought all of that was attributable to
my quit, or too much vino. I guess that's why nobody calls me "Dr.
Fred."

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) rates the average number
of obstructive sleep apnea events per hour as your Respiratory
Distress Index (RDI). An RDI of 0 to 5 in normal; 5 to 20 is mild; 20
to 40 is moderate; over 40 is considered severe. An apnea event must
last at least 10 seconds to be considered an event. It is not uncommon
to see RDIs well above the 40. In some cases RDIs were well above 100,
with events lasting as long as 90 to 120 seconds and SaO2s going below
70% when normal is 95% to 100%.

My RDI was 44. My blood oxygen dropped to 68%. That's very
dangerous.

OK, so now I get one of those really cool (not) mask things with a
blower attached. I will let you good folk know if this solves
anything. I have visions of my gf standing up on the bed, swinging it
by the hose and beating me with the machine yelling, "turn that damn
thing off!"

Thank God and AS3 I don't smoke anymore. Soon I will have a hip
replaced and some dental implants. Just call me "cyborg."

Oh, yes, and then there's this:

Three years, eight months, 18 hours, 21 minutes and 48 seconds. 26795
cigarettes not smoked, saving $3,014.47. Life saved: 13 weeks, 2 days,
55 minutes.

Fred
