Getting there.. + getting pneumonia?

by Chris Morse <win32mfc@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 3, 2008 at 07:36 PM

Hi all.. This group was really helpful when I quit last July. I just
hit the 10 month mark, which is kinda cool. In the past few weeks
I've had some cravings that seemed to last a few hours (sort of like
that basic "feeling" like you need one..) I've also gone through a
separation now. I had kept my last pack of cigarettes in the kitchen
for many months after I quit. At one point, a few months ago, I did
pick them up, half ready to have one.. but I threw them down and said
"No, I'm not going to throw that away.." (meaning my quit, of
course).. a few weeks later I just threw the pack out, as I was
cleaning the kitchen.

In the middle of Feb of this year I got a fever, bad. I was taking a
hot shower and felt a massive head rush, then basically passed out for
a bit. Then I had the shakes. A couple days later it seems that I
developed pneumonia. It was basically a full week before I got to the
Dr's to be checked out and given antibiotics - of which he started me
on one set then moved me quickly to a stronger set, after seeing my
xray. I was basically bed ridden for two weeks, and even then I was
still weak, but I had to get back to work. I still feel a little of
the check congestion now and then, and it's been a good 2 months since
I started to feel better. My Dr and I think my immune system was
weaked by stress.. anyhow, I'm in half decent shape, and I take
karate twice a week and get out on the weekends.

Has anyone else developed pneumonia after having quit for some
months? I've never had it before and, in fact, I've never been very
ill before at all, and I'm 38 now.

Anyhow, originally, I never thought I was going to be able to quit,
and I did it cold turkey without specifically planning it. It just
sorta happened. I smoked for 16 years and only quit once, in may
2005, for about 3 weeks.. other than that, I don't think I ever went a
full day without a smoke.

If you've quit, congrats, and if you're trying, you CAN do it!
Mostly, it sucks for about a week, and then three weeks of kinda
sucks.. after that you're not thinking about it much, and it's less
and less each day.. That has been my experience.

Cheers!
