Dear Mike,
I just found this "Talk About" site, and came across your two questions. I
also wear a hernia belt for a herniated illeostomy.I'm currently going to
have to go for my third hernia surgey very soon, I also have a twisted
bowel. The hernia belt is to sup****t the hernia. It helps hold in one
place, and it's uses after surgery is to hold area intact in hopes of
preventing another hernia. I find if I don't wear mine, I get a terrible
backache! You must take the hernia belt off at night when you get ready to
get into bed. This allows your abdomen to rest. But put it back on as soon
as your feet hit the floor. The only times not to wear it is when you're
resting or sleeping. I have purchased stoma caps, If my stoma is active I
will put one on while I'm getting ready to put on a new appliance. Also I
sometimes wear one when I get into the shower.
Hope this helps you! I've had my illeostomy since 2005.
