When I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and had my colon removed, I
thought that removing the colon just meant removing 6 feet of flexible
pipe, until I saw a programme about the removal of the colon on TV.
There are a mass of blood vessels feeding the colon, so I don't think
the colon can just be 'rerouted' to the right side, it would have to be
shortened, (which would have more or less the same effects of an
ileostomy when it was shortened to the right side), and is probably why
an ileostomy was suggested. If you have a look at the following link it
shows those blood vessels in position, and the complexity of the colon,
the text is in Italian (I think), but I cannot find a similar image with
an English description.
