magnesium levels

by Handler <> Jan 4, 2007 at 05:46 PM

Greetings!

I'm not an ostomy patient but I've taken care of my wife who has a
jejunostomy (Jejunostomy: A surgical operation to create an opening of
the jejunum (a part of the (a part of the small intestine) to a hole
(stoma) in the abdomen.) Which is outside of the norm in this channel
it seems.

I've been doing this for since 2000 with her. I've seen her go up and
down with weight, bad infections from central lines, lack of
nutrition, you name it!

She's a tiny thing at 4'10" but she maintains a good 96-100. You
folks know it goes up and down like a yo-yo.

Here's our plight. She still eats by mouth and at night takes in 1
liter of electrolytes and 500ml of peptemin formula through a mickey
button. What we've run into is a problem with magnesium absorbtion.
Now if you introduce to much 'mag' you induce some wicked diarrhea
which is not good for somebody with less than 3 feet of small bowel.
Our nutritionist has us adding 2 tablespoons (roughly 10cc) magnesium
citrate to the feeding at night. Poor thing .. i can't count the
amount of times she emptied the pouch. Next night we tried adding
liquid amodium to slow the bowel down. We used roughly 6 tablespoons.
Same results.

What she's trying to do is get away from the 'mag' shoots twice a
week. They leave some horrible lumps on her tush and thighs to the
point whereby it's extremely painful to sit or walk.

Question is .. has anybody else out there had a problem with magnesium
absorbtion and what was solution? Given your physical condition is
close to ours.

Thanks for your answers and suggestions. If you have any websites
that deal with all this .. please point them out.. the more ammo the
better!!!!

Regards,

Dave
