My wife has secondary progressive MS. A gynecologist has recently
prescribed
Aldara to treat genital warts. Aldara is a topical cream which draws an
immune system response to the site of the wart to destroy the virus. In
fact, it is the only effective treatment since it is the only one which
destroys the underlying virus. So far so good.
When I asked the gynecologist if there would be a problem since MS is
thought
to be an auto-immune disease, he said no because the cream was topical.
However, I have now done some research and found that in the course of
treatment, it is not uncommon for the area to become red and ulcerated
allowing the Aldara to get into the bloodstream and causing systemic
reactions such as flu like symptoms. Can you see where I am going with
this?
My fear would be unwittingly stimulating the immune system of someone with
an
auto-immune disease. Our neurologist is out of town for a few weeks and
neither the drug company nor the pharmacist has any information that would
contraindicate it's use in MS... they pass the buck back to the
neurologist.
I am definitely not going to start treatment until I talk to the
neurologist.
In the meantime, I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any relevant
experience (as well as do further research).
Thanks.
