An inmate came to me today--in tears--because Medical told her she's in
end-state liver disease. The conversation went sort of like this (but
much
longer):
"How do they know you'red end stage?"
"They said they could tell from my blood tests. My ammonia is 111 and
that
means my liver is about gone."
"Okaaaaay....and when they did your biopsy, did they tell you what that
showed?"
"Oh, I haven't had a biopsy since 1999, way before I was locked up."
"But based on your blood tests, your elevated ALT and AST and the ammonia,
they say they can't treat you because you're too far gone, right?"
"They said I need to get on the transplant list yesterday or I won't live
much longer."
Ok, somebody please give me the data to rebut this BS. Granted, she may
be
stage 4--no way of knowing--but whoever heard of diagnosing end-stage
end-of-the-road liver disease from blood tests?????
