Lap band for reflux?

by "Chris Baxter" <cgbaxter@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jan 24, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Is there any research being done to see if using the lap band procedure
could be effective to treat reflux? It has shown good results to stop
reflux in obese patients, why not in non-obese? It seems like it could
have
potential advantages over fundoplication in that it's completely
adjustable
so if it's too tight, it can be loosened, etc. If it were placed at the
sphincter muscle it seems that the normal stomach size and capacity would
be
retained. It also seems like it might be more sturdy and less easily
compromised by high internal abdominal pressures such as what might occur
during heavy lifting or chronic coughing.
