Howard,
For talking purposes can we assume it takes 2-4 hours of food to leave the
stomach in a normal person, depending on what has been eaten and how much
fat and liquid content, starch, meats etc.
If this is so how does the barium sulfate that you ingest before an
abdominal catscan or an upper GI get into the lower extremities so fast.
You drink the stuff for an UGI, and the test only takes about 15 minutes
or
so and the radiologist makes comments about gastric motility and duodenal
peristalsis. And for an abdominal catscan (where you drink a large
amount),
I don't know how far down the GI tract it goes right after you finish
drinking it, but then they scan you right after (please comment on how far
down it goes for the upper GI - ie between the time that you drink it and
the time they scan you right afterward).
Is it something about the barium sulfate or another ingredient like
sorbitol
that makes it pass on through quickly or is just because it is liquid in
nature (although it is thick). Also how long does it take a glass of
water
to pass from your stomach into your duodenum.
Thanks...Pete
