Closed captioning on DVDs disappears when HDMI cable is used

by Danny <hokiewolf@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Aug 10, 2008 at 08:43 AM

My GF and I use closed captioning(CC) on our TV all the time. We were
disappointed to learn that the HDMI technology has disabled CC on our
TV when we watch a DVD that does have CC. If we hook the DVD player
up via the analog (yellow, red, and white) cables, the CC returns but
we lose the better picture quality provided by the upconverting HDMI
technology. If the DVD has subtitles, we can switch to those, but
more and more DVDs (mostly old TV series) are being issued with CC
only and no subtitles.

Not that it would do any good, but I'd like to register a complaint
with someone...the FCC, the people behind the HDMI technology, the DVD
player manufacturer(in my case Philips DVP5990) who failed to include
CC conversion capability in their DVD player, etc. Wish I knew the
name of a TV columnist who is a big fan of CC.
