Some group members seem to get insecure when a few days pass without
anyone posting information or problems. I just posted the following to
a new member of the group but it occurred to me that I was opening up
an interesting topic. So here it is again. I would be interested in
hearing the views/experience of other members of the group.
The thing missing in your re****t on your evaluation is a speech
comprehension test. These are hard work - the audiologist reads random
words and phrases and you repeat them, if you can. He/she does this
for each ear and for both ears. The result is a percentage - 100% is
perfect.
Most of the audiologists I have dealt with do this as a matter or
routine (and the best ones - in my experience - also do it after
hearing aids have been fitted). But I gather from posts, both by
'audiologists', and others, that many, perhaps most, members of the
group have never been subjected to a comprehension test.
Recently there was a brief exchange on people doing their own - having
a member of their family, or SO, do it.
I must say that such a test, whoever conducts it, is worthwhile and,
invariably, interesting. You become aware of the types of words which
are hard to interpret. You become (intensely) aware of how much you
rely on lip-reading (the audiologist hides his/her mouths or
blindfolds you). And, above all, you become aware of the im****tance of
context - it is much much easier to understand phrases than isolated
words. Finally, in my case at least, the increase in comprehension
when engaging both ears, rather than, one, is immediately apparent to
the testee and is also reflected in the score.
