I'd have wanted to slug her too, Genie! The difference between people
like us (who want to hit out but don't) and people like this young
woman, is that we grew up in an era when we were taught self-
discipline. (I'm the same age as you and my daughter was 30 when she
died). I know I keep banging on about this, but I actually think that
self-control makes you a much nicer person AND THEREFORE A MUCH
HAPPIER PERSON. I don't know what's got into people nowadays. I
think it's a vicious circle. Nastiness seems to rub off from one
person to another. You can understand when people (and I've sometimes
thought them a bit cranky) want to start a Polite Society. One thing
I did learn years ago is that I'm never going to let someone else
decide what sort of a person I am. If I want to be a nice person, I'm
not going to let their nastiness make me otherwise.
