I believe all these stories have everything to do with actual grief.
Here's mine; yesterday I was at a local grocery food chain trying to
buy ready-to-bake rolls for a family dinner. There were none in the
bakery section, so I flagged down the only baker working. I asked
about the quickie rolls;he said there were some in his freezer and was
about to turn to go get a package for me when a young woman ( I'm 66)
came out of nowhere, got in his face demanding a birthday cake. He
pointed her in the direction of the cases where they were, and
continued to help me. Before the man even left the freezing area, this
same woman was back in his face holding a cake demanding that he write
"Happy birthday to so- and so on it. At that point I stood between the
two and called the woman RUDE. She responded that she had done no such
thing. I reminded her that I had been talking to this baker about my
problem, and then she told me to "get a life".
It really threw me for a loop. Since February of 2006, I have been
treated for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, and 18 months ago my only
daughter died at the age of 31. I have an ulcer, which I think is
understandable, but I don't think I have to be treated this way by a
young upstart whose only focus is her own needs when she wishes them.
I honestly wanted to haul off and slug her.
I did not do it. But, it reminded me that I am still mourning, and
grieving. It will never completely be gone and my feelings are going
to be hurt from time to time. I think I have made tremendous progress.
However, this does not excuse the lack of manners and respect from the
"Me Generation".
