Shellfish allergies

by rfdjr1@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Aug 27, 2008 at 11:15 PM

I suddenly became allergic to shellfish a few years ago. I say suddenly
because
all my life I could eat lobster, shrimp and crab. A lot of it in fact, as
I live
in New England. Then one evening while eating shrimp, I broke out and
ended up
in the ER. Not knowing if it was an issolated incident, I tried shrimp
again a
few months later and started to break out again, although that time I had
Benadryl on hand and loaded up with it and the attacj was very mild and
short
lived. I haven't touched it since. Also, I never went to an allergist for
it. I
just figured I;d stay away from shellfish. However, I can eat all the
clams I
want. Clam chowder, fried, steamers. No problems. I wondered if, while I
haven't
tried them in years, if I could also eat scallops. Aren't they in the same
family as clams and not lobster or shrimp? Just curious. It really stinks
to
live in the Northeast and not be able to enjoy its food crop.
