Endometriosis is a medical condition where the uterus lining -
normally inside the uterus - develops on the outside of the uterus. As
you can imagine, anytime our body develops in a way it's not supposed
to, there are health complications ... sometimes serious.
In the case of endometriosis, the health conditions are usually
related to other pelvic organs and cause pain and even infertility.
Endometriosis most commonly occurs on the outside of the uterus, but
can also be located in the bladder, fallopian tubes, intestines and
ovaries.
Endometriosis may also spread to the vagina or cervix and has even
been known to develop in other areas of the body, including the lungs.
Endometriosis affects between 2% and 10% of the female population -
without regard to ethnicity or socio-economic background. Of those
affected, 1 in 3, tragically, is infertile. There is no known cure.
Although women of any reproductive age (from the first period to
menopause) can develop it, endometriosis typically affects women
between the ages 20 to 30.
After menopause, endometriosis diminishes or disappears.
