Teachers: BestFriends or Mentors? Where to draw the line

by "Nguyener87" <nguyener87@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Dec 5, 2006 at 09:05 AM

The main goal of a teacher is to recognize every student as an
individual and discover a way for them to relate to the subject. Many
teachers do so by sharing personal experiences and treating their
students with respect and as equals. Although this teaching method is
effective for many young scholars, there are always those few that
listen to the lecutre, hear appropriate and inappropriate comments or
jokes and not know the difference. Now at the highschool I went to, an
unfortunate incident occured where a teacher was accused of having
relations with a student. After the removal of that teacher, other
teachers began to distance themselves because they were told to
recognize the fact that they are strictly there to teach and not to be
friends with the students which could confuse others into thinking they
are closer then what they seem. Cl***** got worse and cold hearts ran
through the halls. Being a senior at the time I spoke out and argued
that they weren't considered friends, but because of the close
relation****ps built, they were seen as mentors. By segregating teachers
and students, they were destroying the very thing that made the school
home away from home. That was the first time in my life where I
witnessed the teachers learn something from us, the students.

Now am I wrong to think this way? Being in college, professors are cold
and teach the material required without stopping to take a breath.
Students seem to do well still. It seems the further we get in school
the colder things are but would it be that bad if they just taught the
required material without making any sort of relation****p even in
gradeschool. Would the end result really be that bad or different?
