I'm only going to them to get the drugs! The health center where I get
my primary care hasn't authorized prescription of Byetta yet, so until
they do I have to go outside for it.
The appt this morning didn't go as badly as my first appt. I went in
there today determined not to let myself get involved in a fight. When
things began getting tense, I said, "I think we're working from
different information" and shut up.
A couple of notable spots when I had to do this:
When I asked what the normal lab range was for the A1c result I got.
She started giving me BG ranges. No, no, I said. The normal range from
the lab since procedures and equipment aren't standardized yet. "The
only range I know of is the blood glucose range to match the A1c" she
said. "Never mind," I said. "I think we're working......."
Then when I mentioned low-carbing she started in on how it's a terrible
way to eat, very unhealthy, and no-one can stay on it. I just said,
"Ah."
Come to think of it, I said "Ah" a lot. It's nice and neutral,
acknowledging that she's said something without giving any content in
the response.
I said "Ah" when she said that aiming for weight loss was primary and BG
control secondary and that unscheduled exercise didn't count. I kid you
not. She asked about exercise, and I said that I had a lot of walking
built into my life because I don't own a car. "But that's lifestyle!"
she exclaimed. "I'm asking about scheduled exercise. No scheduled
exercise?" while she shook her head sadly.
But I did get her to smile! First time in two appointments! (I
referred to Byetta as "lizard spit.") And I think she may have actually
looked at my face. That's a first. I think the only part of me she
looked at last time was my feet.
I am glad it's over and that I have my prescription. And I'm proud that
I didn't take any of the bait and get into fights as I did last time.
They have their information, and I have mine. They're determined to
live by theirs, but it's my feet and kidneys and eyes and heart at
stake, so I'll live by mine. I can only hope that at some point someone
will actually READ the ACCORD study and tell Joslin what it really says.
*sigh*
