You've spoken of the power of the mind in this kind of thing in the
past. I recall a a stroke victim who made a point of carefully
cracking open walnuts and carefully picking the nuts clean with
tweezers before eating them. Walnuts are corrugated in way vaguely
resembling the brain, so while doing this he imagined that he was
cleaning his brain. The little ritual was completed by eating the now
magically charmed nut.

Not the sort of thing that's easily amenable to scientific testing,
but it certainly made him feel better. As someone recently pointed
out, our human brains have our rationality and intelligence bolted on
top of something resembling a dog's brain, which in turn is bolted on
top of something resembling a lizard's brain. Our brains seem to work
best when those three brains are all lined up and marching to the same
tune. These days we tend to dismiss these old fa****oned symbolic
rituals as discredited superstition. But maybe the magic is not in the
effects on the world, but in being able to engage the ancient parts
of our brains.

Best wishes, Quentin.
