And it's long, so ignore/delete if you choose.
I've lurked off and on here for several years. My husband is T2,
diagnosed
about 15 years ago. I've been quite suspicious for the last 3-4 years
that
all was not well, and I was right. That's probably another very long
story,
but he spent about a week in the hospital, oral diabetes meds were
discontinued, and he is now on injected insulin.
{Alan might remember a brief conversation he and I had here in November of
2006, in which I expressed dismay as a caregiver that I could see
dangerous
patterns developing and felt frustrated and powerless to reverse the tide.
I spend a lot of time trying to stay away from "I told you so" syndrome,
since that will help very little at this point, but I still regret my
inability to communicate my unease in an effective manner and change the
sequence of events}
Anyway, I am facing knee replacement surgery, I've suspected that other
health conditions might need expert consultation beforehand, so I went to
the md for a brief visit. He ran some blood tests, and called me back in
to
talk.
bg was 390 (not fasting, within an hour after lunch)
A1c was 11
I could tell he was stunned, and so was I. Except for a sudden drop in
weight of about 10 pounds (4 1/2 kg) which I attributed to the stress of
my
husband's serious illness and hospitalization, I am symptom free. Well
except for the bg readings, but I mean before he ran the tests.
I'm now taking 500 mg of metformin twice a day, and 5 mg of glyberide
twice
a day. I've checked the various links on getting started on testing, I'm
cut back on starching carbs, and will see the md next week. There is a
diabetes education center near my home, available for consults through md
referral, and they were very helpful when my husband was diagnosed. I'm
planning to ask the md to send me there.
waking bg has been below 180 for several days now.
during the day and evening it has varied quite a bit, and not always any
clear connection between what I've eaten. One post dinner reading was
above
300, but an hour later it was down to just above 200.
The first thing I've noticed (and I've attributed it to adjusting to the
meds) is a kind of weak light headed shakiness mid morning and mid
afternoon. I've settled on a handful of small peeled carrot chunks and a
slice of cheese.
BUT - and this is/will be huge for me. Most of my calories have come from
carbs, for several years now. I've consumed, on the average, about 200g
of
protein intense food daily, often gone for several days following a
vegetarian diet with 8-12 oz of low fat milk a day. so far everything
I've
read means I may need to bid goodby to that pattern.
I'm aware before you tell me that good results from the md and my own
testing will be an incentive to keep it up. And, seeing how much trouble
my
husband got into with heart, kidneys, edema, etc is another incentive.
Since he is now much much weaker than he was just a few short months ago,
if
I go down we're both in deep deep doodoo.
And the issues of post surgical care for me after the knee fixup are, if
possible, even more acute than they were.
THanks for reading this far down. Perhaps a long introduction of this
type
is not the way to go on ADA. If so, please ignore me and accept my
apologies.
Oh, and PLEASE, call me Woodstock
