Hi,
This is a long one.
First of all, as far as I know I don't have diabetes. But, a few medical
tests later and you never know.
The background.
On Tuesday, I took half a day sick at work. Within half an hour of
getting in, I started getting these flu-like symptoms. Chills, headache,
stomach ache, aching legs, weakness etc.
7 hours later it seemed I was feeling much better, but I noticed a rash
on my leg.
Wednesday, this rash continued to develop and I was virtually unable to
walk. Thursday I was off to the docs where they ummed and ahhed, but
eventually settled on the idea it might be Cellulitis, and certainly, my
research on the internet seems to suggest that everything I experienced
fits.
Im 6ft 1. The GP took my weight, which according to his scales say
128kg. My scales say 101kg and that's pretty much confirmed on other
scales.
My blood pressure was 138 over 82. Pulse 92.
My Blood Glucose, was 6.3. As far as I recall, I hadn't eaten anything
in the past twenty hours since the previous days lunchtime. Although I
was drinking cups of tea with sugar and probably had my customary hot
chocolate the night before. I was kind of cra****ng and getting very
tired on the night during the untreated stage of cellulitis. Nothing
like that before or now Im on flucloxacillin.
My GP seems to suggest 6.3 is a little bad and he wants me to go for a
fasting blood test next week.
Now, here's the kicker. I don't think he's right.
I think he was wrong to perk up at the tiredness given that tiredness is
a symptom of cellulitis, so it's unfair to use that as any indication of
diabetes during any bout of cellulitis.
Secondly, I suspect any blood glucose test performed while a patient has
cellulitis could be extremely flawed as I understand that infection and
inflammation can lead to high blood glucose.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Simon
