as the opinions of Consumer Union and the experts they consulted should be

re****ted. Then the next step is to try out the various alternatives and
see 
which works best for a given individual. There are no magic formulas or 
cures out there . . . so far.

That's OK, I wasn't looking for an authoritative answer; my question
was partially rhetorical. ;)

It's obvious to me that our digestive tract *is* populated mainly
through our mouth via the foods that we eat. The diverse flora that is
resident there didn't just materialize out of nothing. Which means
that like it or not our stomach acid does not simply devour all the
bugs we eat whether we consider them "good" or "bad".

While I totally agree with you that each person has to go with
whatever works for him, I disagree that the enteric coating *can't*
hurt. By saying that you're placing a lot of trust in the manufacturer
of those enteric coatings. I've taken many different supplements over
the years, some of them being enterically coated for one reason or
another, Asacol being one of them. Some of those pills end up in the
toilet partially or completely undissolved.

I'm really not trying to argue with you on this point, it's just that
I don't think it's as simple as you're presenting it...
