This morning's commute was longer than usual because school has
already started! When I was a kid (in addition to walking a mile and
a half each way to school in the snow without a jacket), we started in
September, probably the day after Labor Day. I remember starting in
the last week of August once.
There was a delay getting out of my driveway because a school bus
picked up the sprog next door. Shouldn't have taken too long, but moo
decided to have a long (about two minutes) conversation with the
school bus driver. Moo was holding a very young baby, the first I've
seen of their new addition. At many intersections parents waited with
their young kids for school buses (those on the same bus as my
neighbor had to wait an extra 2+ minutes because the selfish neighbor
had the conversation with the driver), and I saw quite a few buses
along the way.
The one positive about public schools starting early: they should end
as early, so public high school kids can compete for summer jobs with
the private school kids. In the past, private schools started and
ended earlier, so private school kids grabbed all the jobs when they
got out of school sooner.
