Hi all,
I went to see my 95 year old father yesterday, and he seemed in good
shape, but for his usual (vascular) forgetfulness, controlling
behavior, and some lack of mobility commensurate with his age. His
eyesight, hearing and all his faculties are somewhat limited, yet he
is on top of all his investment income and watches his money like a
hawk. Vascular dementia is extremely different from alzheimers in
the way it presents itself, though there are some similarities.
I brought him things I know he loves. containers of frozen homemade
soups, chicken parmigian, home made banana bread with nuts and
raisins, and a bar of chocolate...... and one thing he can't seem to
find in his area and he loves a lot, old fa****oned Knacke Brot, a
crisp bread in the round traditional shape. I go to a special store
to find it for him and it never fails to delight him. He puts peanut
butter on it, or even butter or jam. Being extremely high in fiber,
it is helpful to his digestion as well.
He lives 100 miles away from me, and it is a good two hour trip down
and back. But I do this trip every month or so, to visit him in
person, though we keep in touch by phone almost every day. I am
always exhausted after it, as I am no longer young and driving all
that way is tiring.
In reading the posts here this morning, I was so heartened to see so
many wonderful and helpful replies to the newcomers, as well as some
of the regulars. Hugs to you all.
I know this post puts forth no problems to solve, nor does it really
deal with alzheimers disease, since vascular dementia is a different
thing, (though some similarities do exist) but I just wanted to say
how much I enjoy the friends I have made here over time, and all your
replies are so heartening and so kind and helpful. I hope you all
have a great day.
:-) :-)
Hugs to all,
Evelyn
