FAQ File 1 of 5 (1/08): Intro, Contents, Ad Guidelines...
Official Hypnosis FAQ Files
of the alt.hypnosis Newsgroup
written and maintained by
Roy Hunter, M.S., FAPHP, Certified Hypnosis Instructor
(c)1998, revised (c)1999-2008
This is the first of five FAQ (Frequently Answered Questions) Files
for the alt.hypnosis newsgroup. The FAQ contains considerable
information contributed by three different authors in this order: Roy
Hunter, Todd Stark, and A former stage hypnotist who wishes to remain
anonymous. The latest FAQ revisions were completed on January 11,
2008. (Those questions with the latest revisions since the 1/07
version are noted with an asterisk.) At the website where the FAQ is
stored (www.royhunter.com/hypnofaq.htm), you can link to the other FAQ
Files directly from the Contents. Also, you may go to a specific
question in a particular FAQ simply by clicking on that question in
the Contents of the applicable FAQ. (NOTE: The former Resource Guide
written and maintained by Paul Bunnell was discontinued in 2001
because Paul is no longer able to maintain it. In its place, there are
two pages of resources posted online at the **links provided in the
FAQ Contents below.)
The information contained in any FAQ file may be reproduced in whole
or in part PROVIDED it is REPRODUCED EXACTLY AS WRITTEN (INCLUDING
LINKS IF REPRODUCED ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB), AND PROVIDED CREDIT IS
GIVEN to the author(s) in such reproduction.
The FAQ Files were previously posted on the newsgroup twice monthly;
but they are now posted once monthly (during the middle of the month)
in five files, but they are also available for review or downloading
24-hours daily at this following location:
http://www.royhunter.com/hypnofaq.htm
Note that the Hypnosis FAQ is arranged into two parts. The first part
contains questions of interest to the consumer, while the second part
includes questions that a serious student of hypnosis might ask. Also,
the Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis FAQs are based on the emphasis of
practicing hypnosis and hypnotherapy as an ART, thus the responses
come from that point of view (combined with professional experience).
There is another hypnosis FAQ written from a scientific point of view,
authored by Todd Stark, located at:
http://members.aol.com/psychneuro/subliminal/SublFAQ.html
If you have the time, read both Hypnosis FAQs, as well as the other
FAQ files.
Happy reading!

Comments Regarding Advertising and Courtesy in alt.hypnosis:
Over the years, many readers in the alt.hypnosis newsgroup have
expressed dislike for advertising that is not marked as such in the
"subject" line. Strong dislike has been expressed for ads irrelevant
to hypnosis. If you wish to post an advertisement of a product,
service or website, please consider the following guidelines:
1. Include the word AD in the Subject line. This courtesy is
appreciated by those who have slow computers, and/or are selective in
which postings they can download and read.
2. The advertisement should be related to hypnosis or self-hypnosis,
either directly or indirectly.
Credentials given below your name (such as a published book or web
site) are not considered an ad when the purpose of your posting
pertains to the thread in a discussion.
If you ignore these guidelines, you can expect some regular readers of
the newsgroup to be asking you to honor the above requests. If you
react negatively to such requests, that will be considered an insult
to many readers. The possible consequences are: they might be inclined
to ignore your postings, they may not buy your products or services,
and/or they may flood your e-mail with complaints.
Regarding courtesy, numerous "flame wars" over the years have driven
many good people and professionals away from this newsgroup, who
shared from their experience generously. Some critical people have
often posted under several different names, which can confuse someone
who is new to this newsgroup. Some people may question the motives of
those who post negative criticism under several different names. While
each of you should draw your own conclusions, my personal advice is:
MAY THE READER BE AWARE.
I'll speak personally in this next paragraph: My opinion to those who
post in hypnosis newsgroups can be stated quite simply: DO UNTO OTHERS
THAT WHICH YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU. If you wish to criticize
an issue or opinion, please remember to debate the issue rather than
attacking or insulting the individual. (For example, years ago we had
a very interesting debate over the issue of past lives, among other
topics, with strong opinions posted that did not attack those who held
opposite views.) However, if you join a hypnosis newsgroup posting
flaming criticisms or character attacks against hypnosis
professionals, OR if you come here to blast the hypnotherapy
profession, some regular posters might not take kindly to such
actions. Although this is a public forum, "freedom of speech" does not
grant you the right to make libelous statements without possible
consequences.
