GPs do suction currettage all the time. We do not do cervical blocks
(lidocaine) for this procedure. The block hurts more than the
tenaculum. Hypnosis is used mainly for anxiety (which amplifys pain)
and secondarily to try and achieve some degree of anesthesia. As you
probably know, it has been demonstrated by PET scans that hypnosis can
block pain (perception/awareness) by blocking neuron activation in
the anterior cingulate cortex.
