Actually, Erickson relied on a LOT of things that don't fit with the
NLPers notions of what he did. Erickson was a consummate
op****tunistic therapist, who used any and everything he could,
including his own prestige and reputation, not to mention the
occasional magic trick (see the prediction in the envelope regarding
the pregnancy of one of the workers at the hospital in Michigan as a
prime example) to enhance that reputation as well, in order to get his
patients to comply with his therapeutic programs.
In many respects, Erickson was the epitome of the "foxy old country
doctor" who would use common sense, smart thinking and the occasional
practical joke to push a patient out of a perceived psychiatric rut
(see the story about the guy who had trouble meeting women who fainted
all the time and Eickson "forcing" him to go out on a double date with
him and his wife and a brassy, somewhat abrasive, and very attractive
lady - "there's a good place to faint... or you could faint there..."
and embarrassing him into NOT fainting).
Erickson was a sneaky fellow and a lot more than the NLPers seem to
realize - and fail to realize that not everything he did was trance-
related!
