I looked at the video and considered the cir***stances under which
these apparitions appeared. The first thing that is very clear is
that the crowd is religiously primed in a fundamentalist, or perhaps
literalist, sense . You have what Tim Leary, who was actually a
pretty damned good psychologist, called 'set'. This is a huge factor
in what people experience when presented by ambigous environmental
stimuli. Next, you have the setting, again religious and specifically
created to stimulate and enhance a type of mental functioning that is
non-rational, which is typical of almost all religious practices for
as long as humans have had religious practices. You can get even
finer grained and include the culture in which the majority of
population is embedded and you have a very powerful mix of influences
that can produce convincing hallucinations.

I probably should expand on what I mean by 'convincing hallucinations'
under these cir***stances. I haven't looked into phenomena like this,
so I am coming from what I know in other areas and hypothesizing from
there. I am sure that this has been studied and the literature may
say something completely different. The reality of a hallucination is
dependent on the perception of the person, but is often detailed and
the detail is clearly experienced. The details more, or less, com****t
with the experience of normal reality. In religious apparitions,
ambiguity in the perceived details is a hallmark as it is of religious
imagery itself. The ambiguity, or vagueness, of the experience would
tend to reinforce the reality of its supernatural nature through
existing expectation.

Add in the unsubstantiated assertion of many 'miraculous healings',
the probable generalising of the experience of some to the many and
the totally irrelevant testimony of a Doctor who can't '... explain it
to medicine, or science.' and you have a seemingly powerful proof of
the validity of the experience. The inclusion of the Doctor's
experience was particularly interesting to me because of how it would
work in communication. It's wonderfully ambigous. Without actually
critically listening to the statement, it easily becomes verification
of the miracles that were supposed to have occurred by a medical
doctor. If critically examined, it becomes a personal validation of
the experience from someone about whom the natual assumption would be
that they were skeptical by training and where brought to see the
truth through the experience. By simply dropping the referrant, it
applies accross expectations. Very nicely done, in my opinion.

Just my $0.02.
